Summer Sun and Your Feet: What You Need to Know

As summer approaches, more people are kicking off their shoes and enjoying the warm weather in sandals or bare feet. But while soaking up the sun can feel great, don’t forget that your feet need protection too! Sunburned feet aren’t just uncomfortable — they can be extremely painful. Just imagine trying to squeeze burned, blistered feet into socks or shoes. Not fun at all!

Most people already know to put sunscreen on their shoulders, faces, and arms. But your feet often get forgotten. That’s a mistake! Too much sun on your feet can cause more than just short-term pain. Over time, sun damage can lead to skin problems, long-term sensitivity, and even skin cancer. So, next time you’re applying sunscreen, don’t skip your toes, the tops of your feet, and even your ankles.

Special Caution: Healing Feet and Sunlight Don’t Mix

Here’s something many people don’t know: if your foot has recently been injured or had surgery, it’s even more sensitive to the sun! That’s right — a healing foot reacts more strongly to UV rays. Why? Because when a foot is healing, there’s more blood flow and more inflammation in the area. This combination makes the skin much more likely to have a strong reaction to sunlight.

Even a little sun exposure can cause a big problem, leading to redness, swelling, and increased pain. If you’ve had foot surgery, or you’re recovering from a sprain, fracture, or wound, your best bet is to keep your foot covered when you’re outdoors — especially in the first few weeks. Use a towel, light cloth, or keep your foot in the shade to avoid trouble.

Quick Tips to Protect Your Feet in the Sun:

  • ✅ Apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to the tops of your feet and toes
  • ✅ Reapply sunscreen after swimming or sweating
  • ✅ Cover healing feet with a towel or light fabric
  • ✅ Wear breathable shoes or sandals with coverage when possible
  • ✅ Stay out of direct sunlight during peak hours (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

Taking care of your feet means more than just watching where you step. When it comes to sunshine, a little prevention goes a long way. So this summer, don’t forget your feet — they carry you everywhere!
